Research where journeys actually happen

Getting out and talking to real transport users

Transport research often works best when it reaches people in the context of the journeys they actually make. Alongside telephone, online, and qualitative methods, our teams can carry out research on buses and trams, at stops and interchanges, at park & ride sites, in town centres, and at walking and cycling locations.

This allows us to hear from current users, occasional users and people with different accessibility needs, and to explore the practical realities behind satisfaction, behaviour, barriers, and travel choices.

Transport research services

Research across the passenger journey

From understanding today's experience to testing tomorrow's services, products, and schemes, we use research to provide evidence for practical transport decisions.

01

Passenger and user research

Passenger satisfaction and experience surveys, onboard bus and tram research, station and interchange research, park & ride user surveys, journey experience, mystery passenger exercises, accessibility research; perceptions of safety, reliability, and value for money, reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and priorities for improvement.

Research can focus on particular groups, including disabled passengers and people with mobility impairments, parents, older people, and younger passengers.

02

Fares, ticketing, and products

Fare strategy research, responses to potential fare changes, perceptions of value, ticketing preferences, confusing aspects of ticketing; concessionary travel, digital and non-digital ticketing, travel passes, new products, and proposition testing before launch.

03

Digital transport services

App usability and user needs, customer journeys, feature prioritisation, prototype and design testing, terminology and messaging, accessibility, barriers to adoption, testing across different age groups, and understanding how digital services fit into real journeys.

04

Modal shift and behaviour change

Why people drive, barriers to bus and tram use, barriers to cycling and walking, first- and last-mile issues, attitudes to e-bikes, motivations, practical and perceptual barriers, segmentation of potential users, and testing what might realistically encourage people to travel differently.

05

Active travel

Walking and cycling behaviour, baseline surveys; infrastructure perceptions, barriers to walking and cycling; perceptions of safety, cycle facilities, e-bikes, route usage, before-and-after studies, scheme awareness, attitudes towards proposed infrastructure, and monitoring change over time.

06

Transport infrastructure and schemes

Research around proposed or new bus stations, tram stops, park & ride, walking and cycling infrastructure, transport hubs, corridors and other schemes, including concept testing, intercept research, resident and business research, stakeholder interviews, and post-implementation evaluation.

07

Consultation and public engagement

Transport strategy consultation, Local Transport Plans; active travel schemes, road changes, bus reform and franchising, parking, traffic management, walking and cycling schemes, town-centre transport changes; public realm; accessibility; and major investment programmes.

From research to decisions

Insight that answers practical transport questions

The value is not simply in collecting views. The research needs to help clients decide what to change, where to invest, and how to design services around real user needs.

FaresHow might users respond to different approaches?
Service designWhat needs to change about a service?
Product developmentWill passengers understand and use a new product or app?
Modal shiftWhat would realistically persuade different groups to travel differently?
InvestmentWhere should limited resources be focused?
Customer experienceWhich parts of the journey most need improvement?
AccessibilityWhich passengers face barriers and how can these be reduced?
CommunicationsWhat messages work, for whom and through which channels?
Scheme developmentWhat should be changed before implementation?
EvaluationHas the intervention achieved what was intended?
