The project

Giving members a voice in a major policy decision

A large-scale independent survey designed to establish both members’ preferred organisational position and the reasons behind their personal views.

01

The brief

RCS England wanted to revisit its position on assisted dying in light of developments across medicine and legislation. Because of the ethical significance of the issue, the College commissioned Enventure Research to independently survey its UK membership before Council considered whether its position should change.

02

The approach

We adapted a questionnaire with RCS England, securely hosted the survey online and invited the full UK membership using personalised links and up to four reminders. Analysis included subgroup comparisons by nation, career status, membership type, and demographics, plus detailed coding of free-text explanations of members’ personal views.

03

The outcome

The survey received 3,268 responses, representing a 19% response rate. Seven in ten respondents supported a change in the College’s position, and the findings were subsequently considered by Council.

  • Independent evidence on members’ organisational and personal positions.
  • Detailed analysis of the reasons underlying members’ views.
  • Survey evidence that directly informed Council’s decision to adopt a neutral position.
