The brief

  • The GOC needed an up-to-date understanding of risk in the optical professions to inform future interventions and regulatory work.
  • Enventure Research was commissioned to deliver a phased programme combining primary and secondary evidence.

The approach

  • Desk research reviewed relevant articles, journals, and reports, alongside analysis of GOC Fitness to Practise and Optical Consumer Complaints Service data.
  • An online sector survey gathered views from registrants, business owners, employers, and stakeholders.
  • Nine focus groups with registrants and 37 stakeholder depth interviews explored risk in greater depth.

The outcome

  • A comprehensive final report integrated evidence from every phase and set out practical conclusions, supported by a summary infographic.
  • Enventure Research presented the findings to the GOC and relevant working groups.
  • The research identified competency, conduct and contextual risks, how these were changing, and where future regulatory attention may be required.
