Looking beyond current members for the British Pharmacological Society

Research with current, lapsed, and non-members gave BPS a wider view of membership value, benefits, and future priorities than a member-only survey could provide.

The project

Understanding both the member experience and the wider opportunity

A repeat membership study designed to benchmark change while bringing lapsed and non-member perspectives into the evidence base.

01

The brief

BPS regularly conducts membership research to understand member attitudes and improve its services. For the latest programme, the Society also wanted to hear from lapsed members and non-members to give greater context to the findings and inform future strategy.

02

The approach

We designed the questionnaire with BPS, covering reasons for membership, attitudes to BPS and membership, benefits and services, and areas of interest in pharmacology. Selected questions from previous research were retained for benchmarking. Members and recently lapsed members received personalised invitations, with wider promotion through stakeholder networks, newsletters, and social media.

03

The outcome

The research generated 614 responses from members, representing an 18% response rate, alongside 83 responses from lapsed members and 31 from non-members. Enventure Research provided detailed analysis, subgroup comparisons, and benchmarking.

  • Updated evidence on the experiences and priorities of current members.
  • Additional perspective from lapsed and non-members.
  • Clear direction to inform future BPS membership strategy.
