The project

Using multiple perspectives to shape membership strategy

A mixed-method membership programme designed to understand the market as well as current member experience.

01

The brief

BASEM wanted to review its strategy for member services and better support its mission across sport, exercise, health, and wellbeing. It needed insight into the experiences and perceptions of people working in sport and exercise medicine, both inside and outside the membership.

02

The approach

We began with peer industry analysis to understand what other SEM organisations offered and identify potential gaps. This informed an online survey of current, lapsed, and non-members, followed by 15 telephone interviews stratified by profession and career stage to explore key issues in greater depth.

03

The outcome

The survey generated 376 responses, including a 28% response rate among current members. Enventure Research produced detailed reports, separate peer analysis, and infographic outputs, supported by actionable conclusions and recommendations.

  • A clearer picture of what members valued and where services could improve.
  • Evidence on lapsed and non-member perspectives and recruitment opportunities.
  • Practical recommendations to support future recruitment, retention, and service development.
Client feedback

“When considering the survey, the Association was unsure whether or not to use an external company to facilitate it. From the initial conversation with Matt Thurman, it was obvious it was the right choice and the professionalism and efficiency of the Enventure Research team gave us some excellent results we can work with to form a strategy for the future.”
