Measuring employee engagement and satisfaction for the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health

Challenge

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) conducts a staff survey every year to track employee engagement and to gain an up to date understanding of employee engagement across a range of measures. IOSH had also trialled new ways of working in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and sought employee feedback.

Enventure Research was appointed by IOSH to undertake the survey anonymously with IOSH employees and generate a high response rate.

Approach

IOSH and Enventure Research co-designed the questionnaire, which used many questions from previous years to allow for benchmarking. Topics covered included management of the organisation, health, safety and wellbeing, communication, and job satisfaction.

The survey was delivered online. Enventure Research sent out email invitations to all IOSH employees with follow up reminders and the survey was heavily promoted internally. In just two-weeks, 165 responses were received.

Outcome

A very high response rate of 85% was generated. Enventure undertook comprehensive analysis of the survey results and provided IOSH with a series of reports at both an organisation level and at directorate level, which included across organisation comparison and benchmarking with previous years’ surveys.

Insight from the survey helped IOSH evaluate how it continues to improve employees’ experience of working for the organisation.

“Undertaking staff surveys helps to create a positive working environment as employees feel their opinions are valued. It was a pleasure to work with IOSH to develop their survey, analyse the data for them and report back our findings.”
