The General Optical Council (GOC) is the regulator of all optical professionals in the UK and regularly conducts research and engagement with its registrants, including a Registrant Survey to track their views, perceptions and experiences of working in clinical practice over time. Enventure Research has previously delivered this survey on two occasions in 2017 and 2021, and again this year in 2022.
Now delivered on an annual basis, the 2022 GOC Registrant Survey was administered online and included a mix of previously used benchmarking questions and new questions to gain greater insight into the optical workforce, such as hours worked, job satisfaction and future career plans.
Over 4,000 responses were received to the survey, providing a robust sample for confident analysis and generating useful insight into the experiences and perceptions of the optical workforce. The research findings, presented in a detailed report and summarised in infographics, found that although the majority of registrants are satisfied in their role, there have been some increases in negative working conditions, such as working beyond set hours, feeling unable to cope with workloads, and finding it difficult to provide patients with the sufficient level of care they need.
The outputs of the research are published on the GOC’s website.
