The Royal College of Anaesthetists has recently published a series of reports from its Anaesthetic Workforce Census 2025, with further outputs due in the coming weeks. Enventure Research is proud to have supported the delivery of this major programme of work, which provides vital insights into the current and future challenges facing the anaesthetic workforce.
The Census highlights significant pressures across anaesthesia in the NHS, including workforce shortages and concerns around retention and wellbeing. Recent findings, for example, show that one in five anaesthetists expect to leave the NHS in the next five years, underlining the need for action. Earlier outputs have also pointed to a growing shortfall in anaesthetists, which can impact patient care and waiting times.
Enventure Research worked closely with the RCoA to design and deliver the Census, engaging clinical leaders, college tutors and the wider workforce across the UK. The findings are helping to inform conversations at national and devolved nation level about workforce planning, service delivery and the future sustainability of anaesthetic services.
Further reports from the Census will be published shortly, continuing to build a comprehensive picture of the anaesthetic workforce and the action needed to support it.
